本書將基礎2000字的詞彙區分為兩大篇章：日常生活篇與工作休閒篇。前者單字涵蓋個性、情緒感受、量詞、食物和交通等生活中必定運用得到的字彙；而後者則針對上班族閒聊時所需單字，如：電腦術語、面試、運動、環境及社會問題等主題撰寫，二本書的份量一次備齊！
在筆者八年的教學過程中，堅持在課堂上使用全英語來教學，大約有百分之八十的學生會和大家一樣懷疑自己是否真的可以吸收，當然那另外的百分之二十並不表示他們沒有懷疑，只是他們不感到害怕且喜歡挑戰，換言之，幾乎是所有的英語學習者都對使用全英課程或教材的功效存疑。
1. 全英的學習能夠快速適應挑戰
大部份的學習者（包括高中、大專生及社會人士）學習英文的目的，理由不外乎是能使自己與外國人溝通，能吸收國外新知（如瀏覽網站、閱讀報紙與期刊之用），或能通過英檢、托福之類的考試等。由這些學習目標來看，大家所必須面對的就是全英的挑戰，既然全英的挑戰已是不可避免，提早讓自己適應全英的學習教材與環境，便是能使自己快速適應挑戰的竅門。
2. 全英的學習能夠有效地吸收英文
除了部份學習者對語言翻譯有興趣，或是目標是成為一個專業的翻譯員，中譯英及英譯中是他們學習英文的主要重點與方式，其餘的學習者在消化或吸收英文的過程時是不需要使用到中文的。因此，對於有英文學習經驗的學生而言，他們多半已經了解英譯中與中譯英過程裡的複雜性，所以當我告訴學生，用中文翻譯來學習英文的學習效率遠比用英文直接吸收慢很多時，大半的學生已能體會。
1. 群組式學習：同時學習語意上相關聯的字群，例如：mouth, tongue, nose, eye…等關於臉部五官的字一起學，相較依字母順序A-Z逐字學習要來得更容易記憶。
2. 圖片及圖表輔助：圖片或圖表往往最能呈現具體的印象，藉由視覺將物體的形象與字意做結合，一方面能加深對該字的印象，另一方面省去外語與母語的翻譯程序，而加快會意的速度。
3. 慣用詞及片語學習：將部份慣用詞及片語的學習歸於單字學習的內容中，主要是因為單字中有些字意的表現須以字辭（片語）的形式才能將字意及用法具體化。例如：“turn”這個字，與其死背它的字意「轉」，還不如學 “turn on”, “turn off”, “turn over”…等片語來得實用。
4. 利用語境學習：透過出現在不同文章、語句或情境來意會該單字的完整用法。在現實的生活裡，單字很少被單獨使用，而是伴隨片語、句子、文章及情境出現，因此這點亦合乎溝通式英語的概念。因此，要學好單字並靈活運用，利用上下文語境思考、練習是相當重要的方法之一。
《邊上班邊學英文》精選出日常生活最常用的2000單字，主要以圖片和簡單的邏輯思維讓讀者練習語句，除了必須記憶單元中的主要單字外，其餘的圖片及描述的句子都是用來輔助讀者思考，並不需要刻意強記。
